Communication problems experienced by vocational and technical secondary education health services field students with healthcare professionals during internship practice

In order to provide quality service to patients while providing healthcare services, communication between healthcare professionals is as important as communication with patients. Health professionals who are in touch with people in health services must be able to communicate effectively with the patient, their relatives and the work team. The aim of this research is to improve the communication of 12th grade students in the field of Health Services, studying at the vocational and technical Anatolian High School, who have joined the healthcare team in our country as nurse assistants, midwife assistants and health care technicians as of 2014, in their internship practice to gain knowledge, skills and experience, in their communication with healthcare professionals. To determine the causes of the problems they experience and to develop possible solutions. The research was conducted in 16 Vocational and Technical Anatolian High Schools providing education in the field of Health Services located throughout the province of Izmir. A survey form developed by the researcher as a result of literature review was used as a data collection tool in the study. The survey form consists of sections that try to identify students' descriptive characteristics, their opinions on the communication process, effective communication, and communication barriers. The data was collected using a survey form with the permission of Manisa Celal Bayar University Ethics Committee and permission from Izmir Provincial Directorate of National Education. In addition, permission was obtained from the parents and parental permission documents for students under the age of 18 to administer the survey. No sample selection was made in the survey application, and it was administered face-to-face to all students doing internships on a voluntary basis. In the analysis of the data, mean, frequency, percentage calculation, chi square test were used. With the results obtained, it is possible to offer solutions to the communication problems experienced by health professionals who carry out vocational training in activities in order to obtain the titles defined as new members.
