The period of national struggle student movements Istanbul (1918-1922)

Dârü?l Fünûn was the first university at those times in the country. Dârü?l Fünûn Student Protest known as Dârü?l Fünûn Strike was also the first mass student protest in the history of Higher Education in Turkey.Students of the art faculty in Dârü?l Fünûn insisted on dismissal of five faculty members who were holding negative attitudes about national war and were severely criticized for their writings about BeingTurk from the faculty. These five faculty members were as follows; Ali Kemal who was teaching Europe and Ottoman Relations, Cenab Şahabettin teaching about History of the Turkish Literature , philosopher Rıza Tevfik teaching about Metaphysics , Hüseyin Daniş teaching about Iranian History and Literature and Barsamyan Hodja teaching about English Literature.The Case of Dârü?l Fünûn began in Conference Hall on March 29, 1922. Philosopher Mr. Rıza Tevfik made a verbal presentation about ?Literary Side of Fuzûli? at the time.Philosopher Mr. Rıza Tevfik made such a comment that ?Fuzuli was not Turkish, but Persian? in one part of his speech, and this comment provoked student demonstrations. Besides Philosopher Mr. Rıza Tevfik, students were also against to scholars Ali Kemal, Cenap Şahabettin, Hüseyin Daniş and Barsamyan Efendi for having negative attitudes toward the national war, and they demanded the dismissal of these scholars from the faculty. Students declared that they were not going to attend to school until the dismissal of these five scholars, and set on an honor struggle for four months. Boycott was ceased after the dismissal of the five scholars from the faculty.Another outstanding act of Dârü?l Fünûn Youth was meeting with Yusuf Kemal (TENGİRŞEK), Refet (BELE) Pascha and İsmet (İNÖNÜ) Pascha, who arrived at İstanbul as the delegations of Ankara Government, in İstanbul and giving clear support to them.Key Words: National War, Dârü?l Fünûn, College Student, Boycott, National Identitiy
