IETT as a pre-nationalisation institution

The subject of this study is to evaluate the impact of rail system investments in the modernization of İstanbul within the framework of more than 8,000 institutional documents, concession agreements and specifications. The Tram Concession, given in 1869, was renewed in 1881, 1907, 1911, 1912 and 1926. Tunnel Concession was also given in 1869 and it was updated in 1904. Periodic comparisons of contracts and specifications, monitoring the development in terms of contract and specification technique, give an idea about the course of technical capacity while preparing the infrastructure of the modernization process. Tramway Company which is an Ottoman company is a modern business that directs its investments according to rational parameters and evaluates the business performance with current business indicators, provides information flow with other business authorities operating in Europe and makes bench marking. The 41-year period of horse tram and the operation data related the process of electrification of the trams reveals the evolution of mobility in the city. The data series created as a result of transferring the data in the institution documents to a data pool, gives an idea about the human behavior of the period and the development of the city as it shows the course of the business. The public transportation service, which started with the horse tram, not only increased the urban mobility but also directed the reconstruction activities. Increasing speed and comfort in public transportation along with the Electric Tramway accelerated the development of new residential areas rather than the old districts of the city and the northward growth of İstanbul.
