Evalution of mixed-use buildings in an architectural context

Architectural context covers an intricate process that includes all concrete and abstract situations of urban dynamics and building production process. Architectural design belongs to a place and is expected to respond to needs or problems by being shaped by the environment of that place. Therefore, the environment consists of the interaction between structures and people. As a matter of fact, this situation and the context-buildings-human relationship cover a process that cannot be separated from each other. Mixed-use buildings, which are a building typology we frequently encounter in today's cities, are important spaces that shape the city, people and society, as their volume increases especially in global cities. In this respect, mixed-use buildings should be designed in line with the needs of the users of the region with the different functions they contain. When the environmental factors of the current context are taken as a reference, it both nourishes the architectural context and ensures that cities preserve their identities. In this respect, environmental factors and domestic and international examples were selected and evaluated in order to make sense of how the mixed-use building typology is handled in different contexts. In this regard, it is aimed to underline the situations expressed and to create a guide for new designs when it comes to planning in places where mixed-use buildings are not yet located or are not encountered frequently.
