Abstract (EN)
This thesis is a study on investigating the design of space in the architectural design process and examining the effects of space on the design according to the form and the design on the plan plane. In architectural design, space is designed to fulfill different purposes in a space and to create different effects on the user. These designed spaces add functional and aesthetic values to the architectural design. While each space is designed, it creates a voluminous, massive and spatial effect. The aim of the thesis is to increase the awareness of space design in the architectural design process. How the adequate handling of the void in the designs affects that work is explained through the examples examined. In the thesis study, the concept of emptiness was examined with an analytical approach and graphical methods created within the scope of this thesis. These methods were created in line with Şamlıoğlu's (2010) classification of the void in his master's thesis titled Discovery of the Void in Architectural Form and Ching (2019)'s definitions in the space design process in his book Architecture, Form, Space and Order. This graphical method divided into six titles; segmented, holistic, central, functional, visual and transparent/perceptual spaces. The characteristic architectural structures included in the examples examined within the scope of the thesis constitute the limit of the study. These characteristic examples were selected from the sources used in the literature and from Ching (2019)'s book Architecture, Form, Space and Order, and the examples were discussed in terms of space. 30 examples selected from the literature were examined while making definitions in the classification of voids in architecture, and 24 examples were examined by classifying them in terms of cavity design in the analysis tables. Elements to be considered when designing spaces in architecture; It has been analyzed in terms of form-ground, mass-space, function. The concept of space, the elements that define the space, the elements that make up the space and the purpose of the space in the design are analyzed. The scope of the study is to investigate how the size of the space and its ratio to the design affect the form and structure of the design on the selected examples. As a result of these analyzes, all samples were evaluated and the design of the elements that formed the space in the design process was examined. With these classifications, examples were examined and it was concluded that original and functional designs were created according to the way the space was handled in the design process. The importance of space design awareness and starting designs with this awareness are explained with the results of the research.
