Visual analysis of complexity in architecture: Fractal analysis

Abstract (EN)

When designing in architecture, suitability to the place and context are indispensable elements of architectural design. In this study, it is aimed to test the visual harmony of the buildings with the surrounding elements by numerical methods. For this purpose, the relationship of the recently built modern buildings with the ground and the effect of environmental elements on the plan and facade setup in the building design have been tried to be interpreted with numerical methods. Within the context of the study, the necessary literature review was made regarding the selected museum structures, their environments and the method to be used. As a result of the literature review, which are located in different regions of Turkey, which is important for the city in which they are located; Troy Region, Troy Museum, Istanbul Naval Museum and its surroundings, Eskişehir Odunazarı Modern Museum and Odunpazarı Region, Zonguldak Caves Visitor Center and its suurounding caves, Şanlıurfa Archeology Museum and Şanlıurfa Region characteristics, settlement, information, texture, plan and facade are given. In the continuation of the study, explanations were made about the fractal analysis methods used to measure the value of visual complexity in architecture for the analysis of the facades and plans of the buildings. Fractal analysis in architecture continues at the scale of the whole city, the scale of the building and the scale of the building element. This study is mostly on building scale analysis. The fractal analysis values in the thesis study were obtained with the FracLac program running on Image J. within the context of the study, after the necessary conceptual information, the locations, photographs, facade and plan drawings and architectural features of five different museum structures were documented. The visual complexity of the plan, façade, site plan, environmental silhouette, street façades and textures, prepared with the documentation study, was analyzed by fractal analysis method and evaluated with comparisons. As a result of the evaluations, it has been seen that the visual complexity values of Troy landscape and the surrounding texture of Troy region, the Zonguldak Caves Visitor Center and the mountain silhouette, Şanlıurfa Archeology Museum and city silhouettes of Şanlıurfa are close to each other and are visually compatible with the surrounding elements. It has been observed that the visiual complexity values of Istanbul Naval Museum with Bosphorus facade and Odunpazarı Modern Museum façade with the traditional street facade are different. While İstanbul Naval Museum remains simpler than its surroundings, it has been located that OMM façade is visually richer than the traditional street facade. As a result of comparisons; it has been observed that the buildings are affected by the natural or built elements around them while they are being designed. This is an important input in the façade design and the numerical analyzes can be used as a guide for the designer.
