Study of modern Arabic idioms in a linguistic point of view and their place in Arabic teaching

HI ABSTRACT This study aims to investigate structural and semantic properties of the idioms in Arabic and later on to deal with their place in Arabic teaching as a foreign language. For this purpose, conceptchaos observed in modern Arabic in terms of idiom subject has been mentioned firstly and a thorough definition of idiom has been introduced in the introductory part of the thesis. Then efforts have been exhibited to end the above- mentioned chaos in concept, by biringing forward a term suggestion to be used in the maning of "idiom". Some language combinations exhibiting similarity in terms of form and content of idiom have been stated in Chapter One, the terms "idiom" and "proverb" have been studied in detail due to concept chaos experienced in Arabic language in the field of "idiom" and "proverb". Some semantic terms that are linked to semantic properties of idioms and used in evaluation phase have also been considered subsequently. In Chapter Two, some rhetorics utilized in idioms have been considered under "figurative" title and supported by examples, too. In this chapter, have been made of both eloquence boks of classical period and data of semantics studies of modern age used together. Results attained have been utilized in appropriate places of chapter three where analyses of idioms have also been made therein. In Chapter Three of the study, after mentioning some syntax properties of idioms in Arabic, idioms have been classified and a total of seventy five idioms being selected from each category as samples, have been given firstly in simple form and then in a short text and next, dictionary meaning, idiomatic meaning and syntax of each of the idioms have been given respectively. Idioms have been analysed after this, and some short information on their places of use has been given finally. In tljş Fourt and last chapters of the study, place of idioms in foreign language teaching, problems encountered in teaching of idioms, and someIV solution suggestions to these problems take place and moreover, a practical model suggestion within the frame of three idioms selected has been presented in terms of how to perform idiom teaching. The study has been ended with a "conclusion" text where data obtained throughout four chapters have been evaluated and some sequence of deductions have been performed.
