HBIM in conserving the window details of modern heritage: Early Republican Period public buildings on Ankara Ataturk Boulevard and Cumhuriyet Avenue

Architectural heritage includes a comprehensive field of study, from the detail scale of architectural elements to the urban scale. The breadth of the scope of the study makes it difficult to analyze the data on heritage structures and building groups within a certain system and standard. This difficulty in data management can lead to wrong decisions, producing unqualified solutions, and losing traces of original information. The loss of original details in heritage buildings is closely related to the fact that the methods and laws of the architectural preservation process remain limited to traditional methods despite the developing technology. The data obtained from laser scanners, which have become widespread in Turkey recently and used in the current protection process, are processed in the computer environment to create three-dimensional point cloud data. The reduction of point cloud data to two dimensions by creating orthophotos during the protection project process, and the execution of the project process in two-dimensional CAD programs show that existing protection approaches cannot be integrated into the cloud system. In addition, data gaps that may occur in the system lead to the incomplete perception of the details of architectural elements in heritage structures. Another issue in which a standard and systematic approach cannot be developed in the field of architectural conservation is the evaluation of modern architectural structures as cultural heritage items. The fact that discussion of the concept has started recently, registration and social acceptance problems pose a risk to the documentation and intervention processes of modern heritage items. Within the scope of the thesis, the window details of the modern architectural heritage were examined over the selected Early Republican Period and First National Architecture Period public buildings in Ankara. By analyzing the preservation status of window details and the factors affecting them, the benefits of Heritage Building Information Modeling (HBIM-Heritage BIM) for the protection of modern window details have been evaluated.
