The analysis of Al-Mustatāb, the work of Molla Osman Al-Hasankayfī, in terms of qirāʾat and tajwīd sciences

ABSTRACT This study aims to examine the work al-Mustatāb by Molla Osman al-Hasankeyfî (d. 1378/1959) in terms of the sciences of qirā'āt and tajwīd. The study consists of an introduction, two main chapters, a conclusion, and appendices. In the introduction, general information is given about the aim, scope and method of the study, and definitions, topics, purposes, and benefits of the sciences of qirā'āt and tajwīd, along with their brief relation to the Qur'an and tafsir, are included. In the first chapter the life of Molla Osman al-Hasankeyfî, his scholarly background, and his contributions to the sciences of qirā'āt and tajwīd is discussed. The education Hasankeyfî received in major scientific centers of his time, such as Baghdad and Egypt, was among the elements that shaped the content of his work al-Mustatāb. In the second chapter, the work al-Mustatāb is analyzed, focusing on its purpose, content, and basic framework. The work discusses how the sciences of qirā'āt and tajwīd are dealt with together, how these two disciplines complement each other, and how this harmony is reflected in the work. The conceptual explanations, examples and metgods used in the work provide a framework aimed at better understanding the author's approach to the qirā'āt and tajwīd. The author's approaches are analyzed by analyzing each subject one by one. In this context, the work is compared with another well-known book, The Great Science of Tajwīd: Rules of Reading the Qur'an, by Ali Celaleddin Karakılıç (d. 1443/2022) who studied on tecvid science and well known on this field in Türkiye.At the same time, comparisons are made with al-Nashr fī al-Qirāʾāt al-ʿAshr by Ibn al-Jazarī (d. 833/1429), one of the prominent classical period authors and accepted as an authority in this field. It is stated that Hasankeyfî's work shares similarities and differences with these sources. Furthermore, Hasankeyfî's scholarly approach, his authenticity, and the methods he used are also included in this chapter. As a result, this thesis aims to introduce Molla Osman al-Hasankeyfî, who is not widely known in the academic world, and to examine the place of his work al-Mustatāb in the context of the sciences of qirā'āt and tajwīd. The content, sources, and methods used in the work, aim to reveal his approach to teaching these two sciences in more detailed way. Information about Molla Osman al-Hasankeyfî was obtained through interviews with his students, relatives, neighbors, and acquaintances; in some cases, the source-based method was also used.
