Abstract (EN)

Stability, prosperity and peaceful coexistence are rare phenomena in and between formerly occupied states. Challenging the narrow-sighted and essentialist Orientalism and its metanarratives, the Postcolonial Theory maintains that neocolonial policies are the main culprit behind the ongoing backwardness and inter-state hostility that characterize such states. Against this background, this thesis focuses on Moroccan-Algerian relations as a case study of long-standing conflict affecting the whole Maghreb. Regardless of many ethnic, linguistic, religious and historical elements shared by these states, different occupation practices and continued interference by former rulers pose serious obstacles to full-fledged autonomy and mutual gains. Furthermore, as "subaltern" actors displaying "hybrid" and "ambiguous" identity, they experience a love-hate relationship with these rulers. Accordingly, this research contributes to the literature by shedding light to how the past still casts a shadow in contemporary relations between Morocco and Algeria from 1994 (closing of the land border) to 2023. It demonstrates how external meddling sows further distrust and enmity between the two states that block collective action in regional organizations, hamper counter-terrorism efforts, and preclude lucrative trade.
