Abstract (EN)
Traditional ceramic art has been used for centuries to adorn architectural structures. This art form has evolved through various techniques. This study specifically focuses on the mosaic ceramic technique, and the mihrab (prayer niche) and minbar (pulpit) tiles of the Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha Mosque were produced using this technique. Ceramic techniques and mosaic ceramics are examined in broad strokes. The mosaic ceramic technique is a traditional art form that dates back to the Anatolian Seljuk period and continues to the present day. Its distinctive feature is creating patterns by assembling small colored pieces. Although this technique was also used during the early Ottoman period, it became rare in subsequent years. The Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha Mosque is located in the Levent district of Istanbul, Beşiktaş. Construction of the mosque began in 2020, and the interior decoration features mosaic ceramic tiles. Inspired by the mihrab mosaic tiles of the Beyşehir Eşrefoğlu Mosque, the mihrab, minbar, and corner tiles of the Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha Mosque were produced using modern mosaic ceramic techniques. Workshop activities started in 2022 and continued until the opening date. The mihrab, arches, niches, column brackets, column capitals, and borders were all made using mosaic ceramics. The minbar's corner brackets, railing, side mirrors, and passage corners also employed mosaic ceramic techniques. The mosque's last congregation area, arched ceiling cornices, and entrance gates were adorned with inlaid mosaic ceramics.
