A study on the availability of Vertebrae Cervicales in gender determination in MTR/Byzantine population

Anthropology is a science that deals with many different aspects of human beings. He carries out his studies on both the skeletal remains of people who lived in the past and today's people. The first studies to be carried out on the skeletal remains of ancient people are the gender determination studies of individuals. Skeletal sex determination studies are usually made by taking the size and mass of the bone as a reference, while it is also possible with osteometric studies. However, the bone remains in question are not always recovered intact. In such cases, the large number of cervical vertebrae, the fact that the C1 and C2 vertebrae are more sheltered by being located in the pit of the foramen magnun, and they are easier to recognize, have made these bones an important study material in gender determination studies. In this study, the usability of skeletal society cervical vertebrae obtained during the rescue excavation in Sinop, Meteoroloji Sokak, Kefevi Necropolis in 2016, in gender determination was investigated. In the study, 40 male and 28 female individuals aged between 20 and 56 belonging to the MTR community were considered and 28 males and 18 females were deemed suitable for the study. In the study, 3 different measurements, CHT, CAP and CTR, were taken from each cervical vertebra with the help of digital caliper and these were evaluated with the IBM SPSS Statistics (v.20) program. According to this: It was determined that when CHT, CTR and CAP measurements of cervical vertebrae are used together, sex determination can be made at a rate of 81%. The most significant of these three measurements was CTR with 85%, followed by CHT with 80% and CAP with 78%. While CHT and CTR measurement were high in all vertebrae, CAP measurement was statistically significant only in C1 vertebra with a rate of 88%. Among the vertebrae, the most significant ones were C1 vertebra with %90-92 and C2 vertebra with 72-94%. When the measurement results were evaluated together with age, it was determined that they differed depending on the measurement method and vertebra. When we look at the result in general, CHT, CTR and CAP measurements taken from cervical vertebrae showed similarities with studies conducted on other populations, especially C1 and C2, and it was determined that they could be used in sex determination.
