Music prejudice and stereotypes in a context of music perceptions, preference and social identity

This study, which investigates musical prejudices and stereotypes, is comprised of three chapters. The first two chapters are literature research on factors which affect musical prejudices and stereotypes. The final chapter discusses the results of surveys and methods accompanying the research. The first chapter, which can be separated into two sections, describes the social and cultural fundamentals of music perception and factors which determine music choices. The individual and social meaning of music, functions of music and also the psychological and social origins of music preference can be found in this chapter. The second chapter explains music stereotypes and problem music in a context of social identity theory. The third and distinctive chapter of this thesis shows survey results drawn from music listening across a range of 566 participants from 5 different cities and explains the methods and creation processes of the surveys. The results of open-ended survey questions, adjective lists obtained from interviews and other questions based on models from Rentfrow and Gossling are presented with tables and instructions. Complete research shows the multidisciplinary structure of these issues along with people's thoughts about others who have the same or different music preference from them.
