ABSTRACT MSc THESIS THE GEOLOGIC AND PETROGRAPHIC INVESTIGATION OF OPHIOLITE (BETWEEN CAPAR-PARMAKKURDU AREAS) Mine TEKBAŞ DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY INSTITUTE OF NATURAL AND APPLIED SCBENCES UNTVERSIT Y OF ÇUKUROVA Supervisor : Prof. Dr. Fikret İŞLER Year: 2000, Pages :72 Jury : Prof. Dr. Mesut ANIL : Assist. Prof. Dr. Osman PARLAK Eight various patterns of Senozoic and Mesozoic aged rocks crop out around Gözne-Çapar-Parmakkurdu areas 25 km northwest of Mersin. The Demirkazık Kireçtaşı (JkDk) occurs at the base of the Mesozoic unit. Magmatic Complex which consisiting of various rock groups overlies tectonically Demirkazık limestone. Upper cretaseous aged this complex existing of lithıc tüf, dashitic tif, diyabaz, spilit, kuvarslı keratofir, diyorit different types rock groups. Fındık Komplex composed of serpentinite, radiolarite and limestones is located tectonically over the Magmatic Complex. Also, blue, green colored Mersin Ophiolite which is characterized by ultrabasic rock groups is overlying tectonically on the Fındık Complex in the studied area. The Gildirli Formation ( Tgi ) occurs at the base of the Senozoic unit which consists of red brown colored small boulders witin which are found conglomerate and overlies the Mersin Ophiolite with unconformity. Also Gildirli Formation and Kaplankaya formation which consist of sandstone, siltstone, marl, clayey, limestone and fosilliferous has unconformity setting distinguished as Karaisalı Formation shows that karstik features and it includes fossiliferous, its color is yellowish in the karstik levels in the studied area, but other levels are gray. The boundary between the Karaisalı Formation and Kaplankaya formation is gradual with overlied the Kaplankaya formation, Karaisalı Formation is overlied unconformably by Quaternary aged alluvium deposits.
