Abstract (EN)
This study examines the aesthetics of post-Singularity fiction, particularly post-Singularity works by Charles Stross. Providing a comprehensive historical, philosophical and artistic background of the sub-genre, the study demonstrates that the 21st century aesthetic paradigm that post-Singularity fiction establishes is an extension of the 20th century neo-Baroque. It is argued that this paradigm offers an alternative to generic forms of utopian, dystopian and apocalyptic fiction. In this sense, the study contributes to literary theory and science fiction studies by presenting a multidisciplinary approach and theoretical framework to contemporary science fiction within the larger fields of discourse, including politics, art, economy, philosophy of natural and social sciences with which the aesthetics of post-Singularity fiction engages. Such an approach is required by Stross' foundational texts, which both challenge the conventions of the preceding sub-genres that gave rise to them, and construct a materialistic ontology, a post-scarcity economic model, and ethics of absolute difference revised around the theme of the technological Singularity which is in turn complicated, multiplied and rendered into a literary device beyond its definitions and ideological ramifications in the non-fictional scientific discourse. In this context, this study offers a comprehensive analysis of three defining texts by Stross, namely Singularity Sky, Accelerando, and Glasshouse. Reading these works in the light of the neo-Baroque offers a comprehensive perspective to examine and appreciate the sub-genre, and opens up a new theoretical field for future studies.
