The Nordic Noir effect on the Turkish police procedural series in digital platforms

The 'noir' of Nordic Noir comes from 'film noir' as it has the characteristics of film noir as a visual style. The term 'Nordic' refers to a specific location, namely Northern European countries. The fact that Northern European countries have a deep-rooted literary tradition in the field of crime and a gloomy atmosphere due to climatic conditions played an inevitable role in the emergence of the Nordic Noir genre. This study first examines the nordic noir television genre's development process, its sources and global impact, and how it affects the TV series in Turkey in particular. The study discusses what kind of contributions the nordic noir genre makes to the detective genre. In general, the detective genre has changed and developed over the years. Academics divide these changes into periods by examining them in terms of cultural, industrial, social, economic, and sometimes aesthetic. Similar to this structure, this thesis examines the detective genre by dividing it into some periods. Thanks to this, it aims to reveal the genre's development and focus on Nordic Noir, which we can describe as a trendy detective sub-genre in recent years. On the other hand, focusing on detective productions in Turkey, the thesis focuses on how global productions affect local productions in terms of discourse, theme, and visuals. The thesis claims that local detective productions before the emergence of digital platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime were at least aesthetically far from global examples. On the other hand, local digital platforms such as BluTV and PuhuTV captured the aesthetically global equivalents of detective productions. However, when it comes to handling social issues and themes, there is a need for improvement.
