Hegemony of Ptolemaic kingdom over Lycia Region in the light of numismatic data

In this thesis, the Ptolemaic domination, which corresponds to the history of the Lycian Region from 280s BC to 197 BC., is discussed in the light of numismatic data. As the study deals with the Lycian region and the Ptolemaic domination there, in the geographical, historical, and numismatic informative sections, the focus has been Lycia and the reigns of the first four kings, which corresponds to almost all of the numismatic data. Although the neighboring Caria region was more turbulent, it was directly under the rule of the Ptolemies as well. This led it to have a historical ground that overlaps with that of Lycia. For this reason, when it comes to the numismatic material brought together within the scope of the thesis, a flexibility has been considered regarding Western Caria. The numismatic material here consists of those found in archaeological excavations and surface surveys, and those in the museum inventories. The thesis catalog has been compiled specifically for Lycia, and therefore included in the catalog are the coins found in the Andriake, Arykanda, Gagai, Limyra, Patara, Rhodiapolis, Tlos excavations and the Dereağzı and Istlada surveys, and in the inventory of Fethiye Museum, Elmalı Museum and Antalya Archaeology Museum-although included in Pamphylia, it undoubtedly includes material from Lycia. The total number of coins in the catalog is 474. In this study, the data of Pisidia and Cilicia regions, especially neighboring Caria and Pamphylia, are also used. The material in question contributed greatly to the interpretation of the Ptolemaic presence in Lycia. The mentioned coins are used in the sections found necessary in the thesis, and all of them have ben brought together in the "Ek" section of the dissertation. In this dissertation, firstly, the historical geography, political history of the Lycian region, scientific archaeological research and studies covering the numismatic material obtained there are introduced. Moreover, mints, reforms, iconography, legends, symbols, letters, and monograms which covers the regal issues of first four kings are presented. The regal Ptolemaic coins found in Asia Minor, during excavations or available in museum collections, have also been brought together in the light of published and/or directly studied materials. Then, a statistical evaluation is made based on this. In addition to a numismatic evaluation of the situation that emerges in the light of the data presented by all the material brought together, a historical evaluation including the points that the numismatic material confirms or falsifies is presented. Consequently, the material discussed in this study made it possible to make a numismatic analysis of the Ptolemy's domination in the south-west of Asia Minor. Moreover, it has been possible to contribute to the scientific studies that have been put forward in an increasing number in recent years thanks to the data presented by Asia Minor. Undoubtedly, in addition to the current results, it has contributed to the enlightenment of some points that have not been clarified yet. Moreover, it has been possible to interpret the Egyptian influence of the region in the 3rd century BC, based on Lycian data, as well as Caria's, which contributed to it.
