Investigation of the effect of white tea consumption on anthropometric and biochemical parameters in obese individuals

Abstract (EN)

Obesity has increased at alarming rates worldwide in recent years. Obesity is associated with many diseases such as type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia. Many studies on obesity have been conducted on green tea. No clinical data has been found in the literature regarding the effect of white tea on obesity. In this study, the effect of white tea consumption in obese individuals was anthropometrically and biochemically investigated. Based on the antropometric and biochemical assessments, the patients were asigned into control, orlistat, metformin and white tea groups. Those who prefer merdical treatment were given diet, exercise and orlistat or metformin. Those who did not prefer medical treatment were given diet, exercise and white tea. Obese people who did not prefer medication or white tea were given only a diet and exercise program. The study lasted for 12 weeks. At the end of the 12th week, anthropometric and biochemical measurements were reassessed. Body weight, waist circumference, and body mass index parameters decreased significantly in all groups. In the white tea group, contrary to a significant elevation of serum HDL-C, serum cholesterol, LDL-C and TG levels decreased significantly. Other groups did not show significant differences. Serum TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β and MMP-9 levels decreased significantly in the white tea group, while there was no significant difference in the other groups. Serum adinopectin, leptin, ghrelin and asprosin levels decreased significantly in the white tea group, which did not differ significantly in the other groups. Serum glucose levels decreased significantly in all groups except for the control group. In the white tea group; while there was a significant decrease in the levels of serum MDA and 8-OHdG, the opposit was true for GSH. There was no significant difference in the other groups. Serum pancreatic lipase level decreased significantly in white tea and orlistat group. Body weight, waist circumference and body mass index parameters showed significant differences between the white tea and the other groups. In our study, it has been observed that white tea consumption has an important role in the treatment of obesity.
