Occupational motivation and job satisfaction of Turkish secondary school teachers of English and other subjects

Teachers's motivation is among the important factors which can affect the success of any teaching and learning process. Teachers' motivation and demotivation have an important effect on students. Although there are a large number of studies addressing students' motivation, there are not so many studies addressing that of teachers, especially EFL/ESL teachers. Like teachers in other countries, the teachers, especially English teachers in Turkey, face several problems which may cause them to feel demotivated. This study aims to investigate factors which lead to job satisfaction and which motivate and demotivate Turkish secondary school teachers of English and other subjects and ways to improve their motivation. 237 teachers working at state secondary schools in the district of Bağcılar, Istanbul participated in the study and a questionnaire was used to collect data. The theoretical framework of the study is based on Maslow's Needs Hierarchy Theory and Herzberg's Motivation-Hygiene Theory. An exploratory methodology was used in the study.
