Abstract (EN)

Diyarbakır is one of the oldest civilization places that have important trade background.Due to the increase in the city population, the old city enclosed by the city wall (sur içi)could not provide both trade and housing areas requirement. Therefore, housing hasextended to the outside of the old city. Since 1950?s, the new city has extensively beenestablished by various house-building cooperatives in the out side of the city wall.Afterwards, trade has moved to out side as well as housing. Nowadays, the trade hasmostly located on the Ekinciler Street in Diyarbakır. The old small house buildings havebeen demolished and instead of them high stores houses with shops placed on the street.Recently, many houses transformed into shops that have various commercial facilities.As results: 1. The people reside on the Ekinciler Street are unpleased to live there andmany of them left whereas the remains would like to leave the street, 2. Deterioration inthese houses with functional changes as well as physical changes cause unpleasant views.The problems mentioned above, have been determined in this study. For the aim, thefollowing works have been made systematically as follow:The problem, the goal, and the limitations of the study have been provided in the firstchapter. In next chapter, Diyarbakır has been introduced; the movement from the innercity was explained. Moreover, city movements in Turkey and Diyarbakır?s situation inthis process also investigated in this chapter. The explanations and definitions of houseand historical background of housing have been presented in third chapter. Additionally,information about housing problem in Turkey and Diyarbakır has been provided in thesame chapter. The explanation about the study area and applied methods could be seen infourth chapter. Furthermore, in this chapter, the views and projects of the determinedhouses according to applied methods have been investigated; trade shops and houseshave been reviewed by using completed enquiries. In the final chapter, the study has beenconcluded and certain recommendations have been presented.KEY WORDS: Visual Pollution, Functional Variation, Houses
