Teachers leadership according to students perception-a research in primary schools

The aim of this research was to analyze the leadership skills of the teachers working in the public and private primary schools as percieved by students. It also tries to find out how the teachers introduce and differ their leadership skill according to the demographic aspects of the students. For the purposes set out in the study, a survey was applied to the 335 students at the public and private primary schools in Beyoğlu-İstanbul at the 2010-2011 education year.The results of the study were analyzed with a computer statistics programme, SPSS17.0. During the analysis of the results; frequency and percentage statistics were used to define the descriptive characteristic of the students and teachers. Average and standard deviation statistics were used to determine the leadership skill of the teachers. While defining the differentiation of the leadership skills of teachers and students, Kruskal Wallis-H and Mann Whitney-U tests were used as a reference.After the results are evaulated, it is stated that; teachers have high level leadership skills, the private school teachers have higher leadership skills than the state school teachers, the leadership skills of the teachers differ according to the demographic aspects of the teachers and students.Keywords: Leadership, leadership skills, teacher leadership.
