Analyzing effect of personality and self aspects on music preferences of students (Sivas sample)

Aim of the research is analyzing effects of personality and self aspects on music preferences of students. The target population is 452 4th grade students' educated at Cumhuriyet University Training Faculty. Data collection tools are; Five Factor Inventory, Self – Construal Scale and music preference questionnaire. SPSS 22.0 packaged software used to analyze data by (Kolmogorov – Smirnov) analysis of variance, Tucey's test, Kruskall Wallis analyse, while comparing self aspects two way anova and Bonferroni Test. As a result of the research, openness aspect related to all music type except arabesk and pop music. Extraversion aspect just related with pop music. Independent self aspect just related to classical music and jazz – blues music. Consequently, we can state that; aspects of personality and self effects the music preferences of students. There are several suggestions in parallel with the results that gained from the research. Key words: music preference, personality, self, social psychology of music.
