The effectiveness of using learning strategies on English grammar achhievement

The aim of this research is to study the effectiveness of using learning strategies on Englishgrammar achievement.A total of 596 students who are attending an intensified language preparationprogram at Dokuz Eylül University Foreign Languages School participated in this research.All the students completed a Likert type ?Grammar Learning Strategies Scale? containing 28items and then took a grammar test containing 50 questions.The statistical techniques mean, standard deviation, t-Test and percentage were usedto analyze the data. Social-affective strategies are found to be the most frequently usedstrategies. Compensation, comparison with mother tongue and cognitive strategies followthem respectively.Female students make use of more learning strategies than male students. Studentswho are attending a master program use more learning strategies than the freshmen. Nosignificant differences were found in the use of learning strategies between the students whosemedium is English or Turkish the following year.The high achievers use more strategies than the low achievers. Another finding isthat there is a significant correlation between the use of compensation strategies and totallearning strategies and achievement. No significant correlation was found between the use ofcognitive, social-affective and comparison strategies and achievement.
