11 ABSTRACT THE OPINIONS AND ATTITUDES OF THE INSTRUCTORS AND STUDENTS CONCERNING THE USE OF INTERNET FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ( THE SAMPLE OF THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND SCffiNCES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF GAZİANTEP ) By Servet DEMİR Master Thesis, Educational Sciences Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Necmiye KARATAŞ July, 2001,130 pages The aim of this research is to determine the opinions and attitudes of the instructors and students of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of the University of Gaziantep concerning the use of internet for educational purposes. A questionnaire consisting of three parts was used as the data collecting instrument for the research. In Part 1 of the questionnaire there are questions related with the demographic features of the subjects. The second part contains questions on the use and applications of internet in lessons, examinations, projects and homework. In Part 3 there is a Likert type attitude scale. The questionnaire for instructors was given to 40m instructors and 25 questionnaires were evaluated. On the other hand 347 students' questionnaires out of 356 were taken into evaluation. According to the findings of the research it was determined that the departments of the instructors affect their opinions on the preparations of their departments to conduct education via internet. The opinions of the students regarding the aims of internet usage, most frequently encountered problems, the applications of internet in lessons, examinations and homework varied according to the departments and classes of students. There are differences among the opinions of the instructors and students on the regularly visited sites and various applications of internet. The opinions of the instructors indicate variations depending on their departments. On the other hand opinions of the students change according to their departments and chance of accession to internet. As a whole there are not any statistically differences among the opinions of two groups of subjects.
