The investigation of self-efficacy levels and family functions of teacher trainess

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this research is to examine teacher candidates? levels of self- efficacy and family functions according to some demographic variables. This research is based on descriptive method. The study group consists of 206 female (58.9%) and 144 male (41.1%) totally 350 students from different departments of Faculty of Education at Dokuz Eylül University in 2010-2011 academic year.?Family Assesment Device?, ?General Self-Efficay Scale? and ?Personel Information Form? which was developed by the researcher were used to collect data. To analyze the data, SPSS 19,0 program was used. To analyze the relationship between levels of self-efficacy, family functions and the other variables according to demographic properties of participants Mann Whitney U and Kruskall Wallis H tests and also to determine correlative relationships between variables Spearman Brown correlation technique were used.At the end of this study, a statistically significant negative correlation has found between General Self-efficacy Scale level and Family Assessment Device total score levels. It has been determined that as the level of general self-efficacy increases family functions total score levels decrease.Results show that, self-efficacy levels of the participants whose mothers performing democratic attitudes are higher than the self-efficacy levels of the participants whose mothers performing protective, authoritarian and perfectionist attitude when compared. Besides, self-efficacy levels of the participants who are satisfied with their lives are found to be higher than the self-efficacy levels of the participants who are not satisfied with their lives.In this study, it has been determined that self-efficacy levels and family functions of teacher candidates did not show statistically significant differences in compliance with the variables of age and participants? mothers? occupations. However, at some sub-dimensions of total family functioning and family functions statistically significant differences were found in compliance with the demographic characteristics of the participants. The results are given respectively as follows:- It has been determined that family functions of the girls? were healthier than the family functions of the boys? at the sub-dimensions of total family functions, communication, roles, affective responsiveness, behavioral control, and general functioning.- It has been determined that family functions of the teacher candidates? who have spent most of their lives at the metropolis were healthier than the family functions of the teacher candidates? who have spent most of their lives at the villages and small cities at the sub-dimension of affective responsiveness.- It has been determined that family functions of the teacher candidates? who have siblings were healthier than the family functions of the teacher candidates? who do not have siblings at the sub-dimension of affective involvement.- It has been determined that family functions of the teacher candidates? who have two siblings were healthier than the family functions of the teacher candidates? who have four or more siblings at the sub-dimensions of problem solving, communication, affective responsiveness, and general functions.- It has been determined that family functions of the teacher candidates? whose families monthly income is more than 1500 TL were healthier than the family functions of the teacher candidates? whose families monthly income is less than 1499 TL at the sub-dimensions of problem solving, and affective responsiveness.- It has been determined that family functions of the teacher candidates? whose parents perform uninterested attitudes are the most unhealthy and the family functions of the teacher candidates? whose parents perform democratic attitudes are the most healthy family functions at the sub-dimensions of total family functions and problem solving, communication, roles, affective responsiveness, affective involvement, behavioral control, general functions.- It has been determined that family functions of the teacher candidates? are getting healthier at the sub-dimensions of total family functions and problem solving, communication, roles, affective responsiveness, behavioral control, and general functions when the education level of the parents increases.- It has been determined that family functions of the teacher candidates? whose fathers are unemployed is the most unhealthy family functions whereas family functions of the teacher candidates? whose fathers are retired is the most healthy family functions at the sub-dimensions of total family functions and communication, affective involvement, and general functions.- It has been determined that family functions of the teacher candidates? who have chosen teaching career willingly is healthier than family functions of the teacher candidates? who have chosen teaching career unwillingly at the sub-dimensions of affective responsiveness, general functions.- It has been determined that family functions of the teacher candidates? who are satisfied with their lives is healthier than family functions of the teacher candidates? who are not satisfied with their lives at the sub-dimensions of total family functions and problem solving, communication, roles, affective responsiveness, affective involvement, behavioral control, general functions.In conclusion, in this study it has been found that teacher candidates who have high levels of general self-efficacy have healthier family functions; gender, having a sibling, education level and attitudes of parents have effects on the family functions of teacher candidates.
