Evaluation of the affects that families from different socioeconomic groups have on the process of reading? Writing achievement of their 1st grade primary school students according to views of teachers and parents

The purpose of this study is to review the acievement of the students in primaryschool 1st grades, in relation to socioeconomic status of their families.The sample consists of 20 students? parents belonging to low, medium and highsocioeconomic status, total of 60 and their respective teachers. The field researchincludes in accordance with the purpose of the research the questionnaire andinterviews. The findings of the study can be summarized hereunder:The families from high and medium socioeconomic status supply betterconditions of living to their children, their communications with their children turn to bemore intensive and constructive and their expectations from their children do not hinderchildren?s independence and development. Also they are more interested in theiractivities in school and maintain tighter relations with teachers. It is found out that thechildren in these groups are more successful in school. These findings are more clear inchildren from high socioeconomic status group with respect to children from othergroups.The living conditions of the families at lower socioeconomic group are notadequate for the mental development of the children. Parents? dialogue with theirchildren is insufficient and the level communication with the teacher is not on expectedlevels.As a result, findings have been documented to the show this relation between thefailure of the child and this family setting.As a result of the interviews made with the teachers of the students from low,medium and high socioeconomic groups, it has been found that the teachers frommedium and high socioeconomic groups are more satisfied with the participation of theparents on subjects related with the success of their children. It has been found thatespecially the expectations of the teachers from high socioeconomic group are satisfiedfully. The teachers from low socioeconomic group has mentioned that their expectationshave been satisfied to the lowest level because of the educational and socioeconomicstatus of the parents, lack of appropriate working conditions for children at home.Key Words: Primary School Education, Socioeconomic Status, Reading-WritingInstruction, School-Parents Relationship.
