The purpose of this research is to study a) teachers perceptions? about phoneticbased method and the relationship between their perceptions and gender, duration ofexperience, education, socio-economic status of the school; b) teachers opinions? aboutphonetic based method and the relationship between their opinions and the socio-economicstatus of the school.The research was conducted across 6 private and 79 public primary schools and on304 teachers working in those schools. Teachers who participated in this study wereteaching the first grade. The schools included in the sample were elected through thestratified sampling method.The data of the research were collected through Perception About Phonetic BasedMethod Scale and Interview Form About Phonetic Based Method Form.Arithmetic Mean, Standard Deviation, Frequency, Percentage, t-Test, Analysis ofVariance and LSD Test were employed to analyze the data of the research.The research has discerned that teachers? perception about phonetic based methodvary significantly in terms of graduated schools and the socio-economic status of theschool and that they do not vary significantly in terms of gender, duration of experience,and.The other result of the study shows that teachers mostly have positive opinion aboutphonetic based method and handwriting styles. However, they have stressed that problemfaced on new reading-writing curriculum must be solved and they wanted to be trainedabout new reading and writing curriculum Private school teachers have more positiveopinions than public primary school teachers.
