The reflections of the reading comprehension strategies on the primary school students' problem solving skills: A teaching experiment

This research focused on the development of the problem solving skills with using reading comprehension strategies. In accordance with this purpose it was analyzed and commented in detail that how the problem solving skills show a change with reading comprhension strategies which were used to solve the problems. In this research teaching experiment model was used with qualitive approach. The research was done with 20 students in a public primary school in Bilecik. Nine students were determined as focus participants of the research with the way of convenience and with criterion sampling which is one of the purposive sampling methods. With all of participants teaching experiment activities and with focus participants clinical interviews were carried out. In this research datas were collected by way of observation, clinical interviews and written documents. Videos which were taken during clinical interviews and groupworkes, students' working papers and researcher's notes were used as data collection tool. Datas which were collected from different data collection tools were always compared. By teaching experiment's nature, a descriptive analysis were followed through with continıous and backword analyses. According to the results of this research, the students can use reading comprehension strategies like taking notes, reading again, highlighting, making connections between sentences visualisation to solve problems. Also we can see that with the reading comprehension strategies, problem solving skills improve positively during the process of teaching experiments. It was seen that the students, who have a good academic achievement, were more successful than the others during the process of problem solving. In addition to this we can see that, during the problem solving process the students could use the informations by distinguishing. Also it was seen that in problem solving activities, reading comprehension strategies match up and complete each other with some problem solving strategies.
