The analysis of the effects of major oil companies on crew selection criteria for tanker operating ship management companies

Tanker shipping which is a special sub-sector of maritime transportation industry plays a vital role for the world trade. As oil and its derivatives which are transported by tanker is the fundamental component for developing industries, consequently the transportation of it becomes an indispensable issue. Though petroleum and chemical transportation are important for the industries, due to the structure and properties, these cargoes include major risk for the environment. There is some enforcement and impositions to the tanker shipping companies for minimize these risks. At this point, MOC (Major Oil Companies) which are the most important players in the world petroleum industry has made these impositions on tanker management companies. Enforcement and impositions to human factor which is the most significant element in a business has a vital importance to minimize these risks. Thus, this study aims to reveal the effects of MOC to the personnel selection criteria of the ship management company that operates tanker. To achieve this aim, 12 companies operating in Turkey and having largest fleet were selected. The interview was conducted with them and the data obtained were analyzed by qualitative methods.
