Abstract (EN)
There is some water left on laundry after spinning in washing machines. Drying laundry is not a difficult process on sunny and windy days, however, it takes a few days when the weather is cold and rainy. When laundry is hung in balconies, in front of windows or in gardens, it is required to be careful for conditions such as rain, dust and smoke. When wet laundry is held inside rooms, the humidity of the air increases. It affects human health as well as causes decay on furniture and interior walls. That?s why studies about improving spinning performance have become a requirement. Decreasing moisture on clothes at the end of spinning and decreasing energy consumption of drying process has been aimed.At high spinning speeds, due to the effect of pressure and air flow in the tub, droplets, which has been extracted from drum, returns back to the laundry. This is an undesirable situation so it must be prevented. This problem can be solved by optimizing the design of some components such as drum, tub and spinning algorithm etc. Prior to this optimization, water flow behavior must be analyzed in the tub during spinning.The scope of this thesis is to design a test setup with a transparent (acrylic glass) tub for visual observation of the behavior of water flow during spinning cycles. This setup will be utilized to obtain information about parameters which affect the spinning efficiency which will then be used to improve water extraction and spinning efficiency in washing machines.Among these parameters, by focusing on the effect of waiting time at maximum spinning speed on spinning efficiency, it has been concluded that longer spinning duration at maximum speed is required to improve the spinning efficiency. On the other hand, solutions have been proposed to decrease the consequential increase of energy consumption due to longer spinning durations; power losses are investigated and calculated theoretically. The calculations are then compared with experimental results.
