Abstract (EN)

In this research we examined the effects of the relationship between the relatives of the person diagnosed with brain death and the intensive care unit physicians on the decision of organ donation and the reasons for refusing organ donation. A total of seven consecutive cases of brain death were examined which occurred in the intensive care units of the Marmara University Pendik Education and Research Hospital during a five month period. In all of the cases the Potential Donor Form, Family Notification Form, Brain Death Criteria Fulfillment Form and Organ Donation Conversation Form were used to collect the required data. Statistically frequency, percentages and descriptive analyses were performed. It can be concluded that information given honestly and regularly to the relatives of the patient diagnosed with brain death about the process, and the physician's helpful and understanding approach to the family have positive effects on the organ donation process.
