Abstract (EN)

Orhan Veli, Oktay Rifat and Melih Cevdet Anday, who made their name known to the art world with the Garip ("Strange") movement, are also known for their friendship in the history of literature. The close friendships of the three poets, which began at an early age, have been instrumental in the processing of common topics. The sea, which is one of the repeating themes in the literature world of the trio , gains a broad meaning when it is looked at the biography of those poets having a great love for the sea.Even before and after the movement, when all the works (poetry, story, novel, theater, essay) of the three poets of the Garip movement are examined in the sea oriented, it has a structure parallel to the universal water / sea archetype. Water / sea is the first place of existence in myths and sacred texts of different cultures. In narratives, the water that is the place of the first creation is like that ;as it is associated with the woman /mother, It symbolizes a world where human being once was a whole. In the world of literature, the sea perception of the Garip trio emerges through the mother, woman and undivided time as symbolized by the universal water archetype. Although sea / water has a common structure in the collection of three poets, the usage of those terms is unique in each poet. Orhan Veli, Oktay Rifat and Melih Cevdet Anday wrote poems about sea in the context of the Garip movement but the sea they refer is far from deep meanings. The sea is considered as a resting place in the daily life of people. Those poets approach the sea in a pastoral way which is leading to a freedom and isolation place as being a far away from city life. The sea seen in poems is the sea of Istanbul. Pre-the Garip movement, Orhan Veli's poems predominantly contain image and metaphor of sea/water which these images and metaphors symbolise the return to mother and childhood. The sea in the biography of the poet is intertwined with water / sea symbolizing the mother in psychoanalysis. Oktay Rifat, who conveys the sea concept in a more universal aspect along with the Garip movement, identifies the sea with the woman. The poet gives an intense meaning to the sea concept by making use of words, meanings and connotations of the language coming together universal sea symbol that is well up on fishery terms. Melih Cevdet Anday, who focuses on nature and human at the center of his poems, sees the sea as a representation of nature in his works along with the Garip movement. In the poet's eyes, water / sea; It represents an undivided time when human being is together with nature and all other living things. The main aim of the thesis is to analyze all the works of Orhan Veli, Oktay Rifat and Melih Cevdet within the context of the sea concept. Moreover, the approaching methods to the sea, before/after movement, are to identify and analyse the transformation of the sea concept and its common points with universal sea symbol in all aspects.
