Word Formation in Orhon Turkish: Compounding

Compounding is a method that allows two or more constituent to correspond a single meaning in combination of a semantic and linguistic discipline. Although compounding one of the methods commonly used in word derivation, no detailed classification study has been executed on compounding in Turkish. The studies about the topic emphasizes the definition, spelling and classification of compounds. There are structures that set example for the compounds in different periods of Turkish which shows that compounding is as ancient as derivation. This study aimed to make a classification on compounding by making use of data the data obtained from Orkhon Turkic and thus to contribute to the literatüre. For this purpose, a more qualified and holistic classification study related to the compounding has been introduced. Primarily, classification studies related to compounding of Turkey Turkish and Orkhon Turkic grammar were evaluated. Then, the distinguishing criteria of the meaning of compound structures, formation and combination processes were examined. Finally, this study was supported with additional studies by considering grammatical rules.
