Abstract (EN)

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting 1-5% of the population. Recently there has been data suggesting that metabolic syndrome including parameters like dyslipidemia, obesity, hypertension, diabetes is frequently seen in psoriatic patients. Our purpose was to detect the clinical and laboratory parameters of metabolic syndrome in moderate and severe plaque type of psoriatic patients in our study.Fifty patients with moderate to severe psoriatic plaque and 40 patients with nonpsoriatic dermatological disease of total 90 patients referring to Gaziantep University of Dermatology Clinic were involved in our study. Psoriatic patients with PASI score equal or higher than 10, who did not have any systemic therapy (acitretin, ciclosporin, methotrexate, phototherapy and biologic agents) previously were accepted. All of the patients? waist circumference, weight, length, arteriel blood pressure were measured and also, fasting blood glucose, trygliceride, HDL, fibrinogen, homocystein and adiponectin levels were noted. NCEP-ATP III criteria were used for metabolic syndrome diagnosis. We found that metabolic syndrome was more frequent in psoriatic patients compared with control group (p=0,01). In parameters of NCEP ATP III diagnostic criteria of metabolic syndrome only hypertension were found to be more frequent in psoriatic patients (P=0,01) . There was no stastistically significant difference between the study and control groups for obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, low HDL levelsand hyperglicemia. We found that proinflammatory and prothrombotic markers fibrinogen levels were increased (P=0,00) and adiponectin levels were decreased (P=0,00). No difference was found in homocystein levels in patients with psoriasis. We conclude that, metabolic syndrome was more frequent in psoriasis and this could lead to increase in cardiovascular disease risc.Key Words: Psoriasis, Metabolic syndrome
