ABSTRACT PhD. THESIS TECTONO-STRATIGRAPHIC UNITS OF BUYUKECELI (GÜLNAR) - YEŞİLOVACIK (SİLİFKE) AREA IN THE CENTRAL TAURUS REGION AND THEIR TECTONIC EVOLUTION Selim OZALP DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGICAL ENGINEERING INSTITUTE OF NATURAL AND APPLIED SCIENCES UNIVERSITY OF ÇUKUROVA Supervisor : Prof.Dr. Cavit DEMİRKOL Year: 1999, Pages: 167 Jury : Prof.Dr. Cavit DEMİRKOL (Head) Prof.Dr. Erdal KEREY (Member) Assoc.Prof.Dr. Ulvi Can ÜNLÜGENÇ (Member) This investigation was carried out around Silifke, Anamur and Gülnar areas in the Central Taurides where two tectonic units, which tectonically correspond eachother and form a basement to Neogene sequence, were distinguished. These tectonic units metamorphically, stratigraphically, lithologically and structurally demonstrate different basin origin. These units are "Geyikdağı Unit" and "Görbiyesdağı Unit" that is the first time recognized within this study. While the Görbiyesdağı Unit is represented by Upper Cretaceous Sipahili formation, the Geyikdağı Unit is divided into two tectonic slices as being Ovacık and Araca tectonic slices. In the Ovacık Tectonic Slice the following formations crop out; Middle-Upper Cambrian Işıklı, Upper Cambrian-Lower Ordovician Ovacık, Lower Silurian Eğripınar and Hrrmanli, Upper Silurian-Lower Devonian Karayar, Lower Devonian Sığırcık, Middle Devonian Büyükeceli, Upper Devonian Akdere, Upper Permian Kırtüdağı, and Middle-Upper Triassic Kuşyuvasrtepe formations. In the Araca Tectonic Slice the following formations are observed; Infra-Cambrian aged Emirgazi, Upper Devonian Akdere, Lower Carboniferous Korucuk, Upper Permian Kırtüdağı, Upper Triassic Murtçukuru, Lower Jurassic Yanışlı, Middle Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous Tokmar, Upper Cretaceous-Upper Paleocene Hayvandagi. Moreover, Ophiolitic Melange was tectonically emplaced in the region during Late Cretaceous. The Görbiyesdağı and the Geyikdağı units are unconformably overlain by Lower Miocene age Tepeköy and Çavuşlar formations which are assumed to be cover deposits, and Middle Miocene Mut formation. Quaternary deposits overlie the older units with angular unconformity in the styudy area. The Ovacık tectonic slice thrusted on the Araca tectonic slice during the Late Triassic when the Early Alpine orogenesis was active. The northerly Görbiyesdağı unit thrusted on the southerly Geyikdağı unit during Early Paleocene-Early Eocene when the Middle Alpine Orogenesis was active. As a result of the structural data obtained whrthin this study, approximately northwest- southeast trending compressional tectonic regime, which caused formation of northeast-southwest trending fold-thrust axis, and reverse faults, affected the area. Key Words: Central Taurus, Silifke, Tectono-Stratigraphy, Tectonic Evolution. II
