Determination of student attitudes and teacher opinions on the secondary English course

Attitudes of students in foreign language teaching can be used as an input in designing curriculum. The purpose of this study is to determine the attitudes of studentds and teachers' opinions for the English course in secondary education. The study group is composed of 977 students studying at 3 publicsecondary schools and 6 teachers of English working in these schools in the 2017-2018 academic year in Zonguldak Ereğli. In this research explanatory design being one type of the mixed research designs was used. The demografic information form and attitude scale were administered to students and structured interviews were held with the teachers. As a result of the study, it was found out that students'attitudes towards English course didn't change according to gender, class level, having a family member knowing English at home, but changed according to study fields of the students. Considering sub-dimensions of the attitudes, girls' attitudes towards the general characteristics and importance of English were higher than boys; boys'attitudes towards the interestingness of the subjects and teaching style of the teacher were higher than the girls'. It was found out that the students' attitudes towards general characteristics and importance of the course, interestingness of the subjects and teaching style of the teacher didn't change according to class level while it changed according to the study field of the students.It was found that the students' attitudes towards general characteristics and importance of the course changed whereas the attitudes towards interestingness of the subjects and teaching style of the teachers didn't change according to having a family member knowing English at home. Considering the findings of the research, having structured interviews with students was suggested in following research studies.
