A study towards examining 6th gradesecondary-school stundents' case of finding the dative suffix (+a ) and it's function

This aim of this study is to determine whether there is a significant difference in case of finding dative suffix and its functions in terms of different variables, and to examine the case of findings of the dative suffix and its functions at renewed Turkish Lesson Education Program for 6th Grade Secondary-School students of state and private schools affiliated to Ministry of National Education. Also, an effort was made to put forth the thoughts of students and teachers that work at these same schools. Group that is included in this study contains of a total 160 sixth grade students in terms of quantitative extent taken from 4 different schools at 2018-2019 school year which located at Antalya province; 160 sixth grade students in terms of qualitative extent that answered open ended questions alongside the 26 Turkish Lesson teachers that volunteered to join and that are suitable for the standards of this study. In the study, embedded patterns were used to support the mixed method and quantitative data. Quantitative data was obtained by a measurement tool prepared by the researcher while the qualitative data were obtained by semi-structured meetings that take 15-20 minutes. Quantitative data obtained from the students analyzed with SPSS 22.0 package software. Before the analyzes were done, compliance of variables to normal distribution were tested with Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test. After the results of K-S test, Mann Whitney U test which is one of the non-parametric tests was used in comparison of two groups of variables that did not have normal distribution. Kruskal Wallis Test was used in comparisons of more than two groups of variables that did not have normal distribution. After the Kruskal Wallis Test, in the groups that showed differences, Tamhane-T2 technique which is one of the non-parametric post-hoc tests was used to find out the group that caused this to happen. As for the comparison of qualitative data, Chi-Square test was used. Statisticanalyzesof the data were also done along the percentage and frequency analyzes. Statistical significance level was evaluated at p<0,05 levels. As a result of the study, within the context of sentences and texts given in the measurement tool, answer rate of the students finding the dative suffix were determined as 65,60% true answer, 25,90% wrong answer and 8,50% empty answer. Within the context of sentences and texts in measurement tool, when the case of finding factors that oriented suffix connected to were examined, giving the right answer rate of the students was determined as 82,10% and giving wrong answer rate was 11,90% when leaving it empty was 6,10%. The answer rate of students to find the functions of dative suffix within the context of sentences and texts in measurement tool, true answer was 64,00% and wrong answer was 30,20% when leaving it empty was 5,80%. It was ascertained that the case of finding dative suffix and the functions of it showed differences depending on the type of the school and the success of it when it showed no difference when it depended on the gender. The case of finding factors that dative suffix connected, students showed no difference depending on gender, school type and the success of it. It was seen when examined that students took part in this study were better in sentences than paragraphs at the case of finding factors that dative suffix connected to. Common mistakes that students made when finding the suffix were spotted as; thinking adverbial verb suffix as dative suffix, mixing it with suffix' vowel, mixing it with other case suffixes. It was determined that most of the teachers were following researching method when teaching dative suffix, how to find it and the functions of it. As for the students when trying to find the dative suffix, it was determined that they were looking out for –e/–a suffixes while paying attention to the text or to the meaning of the sentence when trying to find the functions of it.
