Examine the attitudes of the secondary school students towards physical education and sports in terms of different variables (The sample of Erzurum province)

Material and Method: The universe of the study consisted of Palandöken, Yakutiye and Aziziye districts connected to the central of Erzurum; the sample group consisted of 1043 girls and boys in 10 secondary schools, 5 of which were private and 5 of which were secondary schools in these districts. In order to determine the sample group, multistage sampling selection process was preferred. Firstly, the institutions where the data were collected by cluster sampling were determined and then the students who were educated in these institutions were identified by element sampling. Convenient sampling method was used in the determination of schools. Attitudes scale was applied to 1043 randomly selected male and female students from the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades from each school. Results: The data were collected using the personal information form developed by the researcher and the Attitude Scale on Physical Education and Sports. In order to investigate student attitudes, Physical Education and Sports Attitude Scale which was developed by Demirhan and Altay (2001), consisting of 24 items, 12 positive and 12 negative, was used. Firstly, the distribution statistics of the data set were made and it was found out that the data showed a normal distribution (p> .05). Based on this finding, in addition to descriptive statistics such as percentage frequency, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, parametric tests were used for making comparisons. The "T-Test for Independent Groups" analysis was preferred for gender and institution type comparisons and One-Way Variance Analysis (ANOVA) test was used for class comparison. In all comparisons, the lowest p <.05 significance level was taken. Conclusion: As a result of the research, secondary school students had a positive attitude to the Physical Education and Sports course when the variables such as education and class in gender, private school or public school were taken into consideration. According to the type of school where the students were educated, there was a significant difference in their attitudes towards Physical Education and Sports in favor of students attending public schools. When the gender wastaken into account, the results were statistically significant in favor of male students. While looking at the class levels, it was concluded that there was no significant difference in the attitudes towards Physical Education and Sports course.
