Secondary school students' perception of abstract art aresearch

In this research, it is aimed to determine the relationship between the perspectives of secondary school students on abstract works of art and their aesthetic appreciation levels related to abstract works of art. The study was conducted with 120 students attending a medium-sized secondary school in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Turkey. The research was designed with the parallel design approach, which converges from mixed method research in which qualitative and quantitative approaches are used together. The data collection tools of the study, the metaphor data collection form used to determine students' perceptions of abstract art, the "Aesthetic Appreciation Scale" developed by Sevim, Hisarcıklılar and Feyzioğlu (2012) and revised in accordance with the study, to determine secondary school students' views on abstract art activities. semi-structured interview form and artistic works created by students in the process. The metaphors of secondary school students regarding their perception of abstract art were analyzed by content analysis. SPSS 22.00 program was used in the analysis of quantitative data in the research. Descriptive statistics were used to determine the level of aesthetic appreciation of the students, the independent samples T test was used to find the difference according to gender variability, and the Anova test was used to test the difference regarding the grade level. Descriptive analysis method was used to evaluate students' aesthetic perceptions about abstract art works and students' opinions about abstract art activities. As a result of the research, it was determined that the aesthetic appreciation levels of the secondary school students were at a good level, and there was no significant difference according to the gender variable and grade level. It has been found that the students generally have information about the main idea and colors of each picture, and they do not have enough information in terms of form and design. Students have successfully completed their chosen artistic work. It was concluded that the students' interest in abstract art activities was high and the participation would be high if the activity was repeated.
