Analysis of academic achievement of the students on the subject for the life unit on the earth geographical concepts and spaces in the social sciences coursebooks of secondary schools

This study is a study conducted to reveal the learned status of the geographical concept and geographical location names used to explain the geography topics in the unit of Life on the Earth named Where are we on the Earth?, Changing Life from the poles to the equator, My unique country, Turkey, Climates in Turkey in the 6th Grade Social Studies Book used in the 6th Grade Social Studies course. The study was conducted with the achievement test prepared for the 6th grade students who were studying in four middle schools in the district of Burdur province in the Fall semester of 2017-2018 academic year. The study, which is completed with the titles of conclusions and suggestions, is a work that reveals new findings in its field. In the study, quantitative research method and descriptive analysis were applied. For this purpose, geographical concept and geographical location success tests consisting of 25 items were used. The obtained data were analyzed using the SPSS 25.0 program. The level of significance in the research results was determined as 0,05 and analyses were performed using arithmetic mean, standard deviation, independent T test, percentage, frequency and ANOVA techniques. In the study, the learned status of the geographical concept and geographical location names used to teach the geography topics in the unit of Life on the Earth in the 6th Grade Social Studies Book used in the 6th Grade Social Studies course has been revealed. In addition, it has been emphasized that whether the success of learning geographical concepts and geographical locations shows a significant difference according to school of the student, income level of the family of the student and the gender of the student or not.
