The analysis of the poems in secondary school Turkish text books in the context of textuality criteria and teachers' opinions regarding these poems' textuality

The purpose of this study is to analyze the poems in Turkish text books of 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades in the context of textuality criteria and to ask teachers' opinions regarding the conformity of these poems with textuality criteria. The research consists of two stages. In the first stage, a total of 28 poems in Turkish text books of 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades were first analyzed with document analysis method, which is one of the qualitative research designs, in the context of text-based criteria; coherence and consistency. In this way, the poems' textuality was determined. In this first stage, the coherence of the poems was first investigated under the titles of grammatical and lexical coherence. Grammatical coherence included the examination of reference, ellipsis, conjunction, substitution, parallelism, functional perspective and time and profiling; lexical coherence included recurrence and co-occurrence profiles. Secondly, in the first stage, consistency profiles in the poems were investigated. The title of consistency included the connections of privatization, generalization, comparison, cause-effect relationship and contrast. In this way, whether the poems had the quality of textuality was investigated and interpreted. In the second stage of the research, all the text-based and user-based criteria were taken into consideration and in this context, the aim was to determine the opinions of the teachers regarding the conformity of these poems with textuality criteria. For this reason, the opinions of 15 Turkish-language teachers working in Elazığ were taken. A semi-structured interview schedule consisting of 8 questions and alternative questions in qualitative design was prepared to ask the teachers' opinions and one-to-one interviews were conducted with the teachers. The obtained data were transferred to computer environment by the researcher and the opinions of Turkish-language teachers regarding the conformity of these poems with textuality criteria were asked by conducting a content analysis. Following the analysis of both the poems in the text books and the teachers' opinions, it was determined that the poems were in conformity with textuality criteria. The research is significant in determining a framework for the textuality of the poems in Turkish text books which have an important role in language education.
