The problems which social studies teachers serving in secondary schools faced, during the social studies education (The examples of Çorum)

Thepurpose of thisstudy is todeterminetheproblems of thesocialscienceteachersthattheyencounteredduringthetaching of socialsciences. Descriptivemethodwasused in thestudy. Theuniverse of thestudyconsists of thesocialscienceeachersworking in thecitycenter of Çorum. Thedatawasobtainedbyusing a tooldevelopedby Akşit(2011). Thedatatoolconsists of threeparts. Inthefirstpart, therearequestionsaboutthepersonalinformation of thesocialscienceteachers. Thesecondpart is consisted of 5 degreeLikertquestionaireincludingtheproblemsthatthesocialscienceteachersencounteredd urigtheirteaching. Thelastpartincludesopen-endedquestions in whichtheteachersexpresstheproblemsthattheyexperiencedduringteaching. Thedatawasanalysedbyusingdescriptivestatisticaltechniques. Thefrequency, percentage, mathematical, standart deviationvalueswerecalculated. Theobtaineddatawasanalsedby SSPS 21 packet program. Theanswersgiventotheopenendedquestionswereanalysedbycategorysingrelatedtotheircontents. Accordingtotheresults, it wasseenthatthestudentswere in positiveattitudetowardssocialscienceandthesocialscienceteachers. Besidesthis, as thesocialsciencecourse is reallyheavyandtheteachinghour is limitedwiththreehours a week in thesheduale, it causessuchproblemsthatthestudentshavedifficulty in understandingthesubjectsandcannotacquirethedesiredskills. So, thestudentsacceptthiscourse as a subjectthatshould be memorized. Theteachershavelack of time toteachthecontent as thestudentsaregettingreadyforthenational TEOG exam. As a result, teacherscannotusestudent-centeredapproach in their teaching. Also, thesocialscienceteachingmaterialsare not available in most of theschools. Thiscausestheteaching in negativeway.
