Evaluation of the relationship between orthodontic treatment and apical root resorption

Abstract (EN)
Objective: The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between apical root resorption and patient age, patient gender, type of treatment, duration of treatment in patients receiving orthodontic treatment and to obtain information to prevent resorption. Method: This retrospective study was carried out by examining the panoramic films taken at the beginning and end of treatment of the patients who were treated in the orthodontic department of Akdeniz University Faculty of Dentistry between 2012-2019. In our study, the data of 1678 patients older than 10 years were checked. After excluding 242 of the patients who had root resorption at the beginning of the treatment, lack of cooperation during treatment and had systemic disease 1356 patients were evaluated for the presence of resorption. In our retrospective study, root resorption was scored between 0-3 and the relationship of resorption with patient age, patient gender, duration of treatment and treatment type parameters was investigated. Results: Patient age and treatment with removable appliances before fixed orthodontic treatment did not affect root resorption. Male patients had more resorption than female patients. More resorption observed in patients who treated with tooth extraction. It was determined that increase in treatment duration increases the formation of root resorption. Maxillary incisors had more resorption than other teeth. Conclusion: The rate of root resorption in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment is influenced by patient gender, tooth extraction and duration of treatment.
