Elements of telmih in the Osman Nevres Divan

Telmih is one of the literary arts that poets frequently resort to in the tradition of Divan poetry. Essentially, the art of telmih involves direct or indirect references by the poet to religious, historical, and mythological figures, events, and narratives. This study provides a comprehensive study of the elements of telmih found in the Osman Nevres Divan. The Osman Nevres Divan we have examined contains numerous examples of telmih that reflect both the deep-rooted tradition of classical Divan literature and the aesthetic sensibilities of the period in which the poet lived. This study is fundamentally divided into three main sections. The first section establishes a broad theoretical framework concerning the style of telmih, addressing its characteristics, types, and its relationship to other literary styles. Following this, information is provided about Osman Nevres's life, literary personality, and works. In the analysis section, which forms the core of the study, the telmih elements present in the Divan are classified into religious and non-religious references. Nevres Divan predominantly features non-religious telmih, which are historically, mythologically, and legendarily studied. These elements are examined in detail, with selected couplets and translated today's Turkish language. Aesthetic and semantic depht of the telmihs in the couplets are figured out. In the conclusion, it is emphasized that Osman Nevres, one of the last representatives of the classical Divan tradition, maintained a strong connection to tradition while also employing this art form with his own distinctive style. Furthermore, the study evaluates how the Divan upholds and enriches the centuries-old poetic tradition. By examining the elements of telmih in the Osman Nevres Divanı, this study aims to provide a valuable resource for research into classical Divan literature.
