The Issue Of Crete In The Light Of Ottoman Press Sources (1866-1869) The island of Crete has frequently encountered invasions due to the value of its special location. Karlar is the first settlers of Crete. Later the island was under the rule of Dor, Rome, Arab and Venice and came under Ottoman rule in 1669. With the developments called French Revolution and Industrial Revolution, the development of mass communication, industrialization and changes in social life caused the idea of nationalism in individuals. There were some economic and political problems in the Ottoman Empire. The rapidly spreading ideology of nationalism in the world guided minorities to establish an independent state. Especially this thought led to the rebellion of the Greeks in Peloponnese in 1821. Shortly after the suppression of the Peloponnese rebellion, Greece gained independence. While the Ottoman State hoped for the end of these uprisings in the territory, the rebellion of the Greeks in Crete in 1866 with the support of the Greeks led the Ottoman State into a completely challenging process. During this period, the press was undoubtedly the biggest supporter of Cretan Muslims. Especially Muhbir and Tasvir-i Efkar newspapers pioneered iane activities in newspaper copies in order to heal the wounds of Cretan Muslims. In addition, by showing copies of the great European powers of Crete, it was shown to the public how serious the situation was for Crete. In this study, which included the developments that ended the 1866 Cretan Rebellion, it was determined that Hürriyet newspaper was closely involved in the events. Relevant copies of the newspaper were used. However, the work of the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish public was insufficient for Crete, and the island was transferred to Greece in 1913.
