Relationship between modernization, individualization and virtuosity during transition from the Ottoman period to the Republican era: Şerif Muhiddin Targan

He studied Eastern and Western musical traditions from a very early age which laid the foundations of his virtuosity. The study views Targan as an artist of a transition period and offers an interdisciplinary analysis of his bridging role in the sociocultural transformations of his age. The musical portrait and heritage of Targan are evaluated in detail through a joint perspective of musicology, sociology and history. The conclusion is that his individual performance, a musical reflection of Ottoman-Turkish modernization, was the most important factor that defined his identity as a virtuoso.
