Peculiarities of forms of ceramic serving pots used in the palace kitchen of Ottoman Period

ABSTRACTThe porcelain and ceramic pots which are usually known by their decorative features have been utensils of the cuisine and have been used during the Ottoman Period. But we keep them in museums as they are the masterpieces of today. As they are the materials of the culture, we must remember that they were once used as functional goods disregarding their beauties. For that reason the aim of this thesis is to underline the form features of Ottoman palace serving potsThis thesis contains only the serving pots of the kitchen. So the rose water sprinkler, basins, ewers, incense burner?s ects. are been being exempted.Ottoman serving pots are basically divided into nine types by the manufactures. They are, Chinese, Far Eastern, European, İstanbul and Eser-i İstanbul, Yıldız porcelain and İznik, Kütahya, Tophane and Çanakkale ceramics. These forms which belong to those production centres, are sketched in black and white drawings to show the change and difference, visually.The Ottoman Palace ceramic serving pots are differed by their geographical and cultural features. The differences among the manufacturers can been seen, especially by the dish shape which was a common shape for the potteryThe Turkish style (Alaturka) and the European style (alafranga) are the main subject which detect the form of the pot. The dessert mug and sauceboat shapes are the new shapes to supply the new necessities of Ottoman palace.Even the production centers were changed, features such as religion and traditions belonging to the Ottoman palace, have been the factor for the change in the forms of ceramic pots.
