Abstract (EN)
Water resources are an important element in shaping the settlements and the economies of societies. In the zoning of cities under the rule of Ottoman Empire, great importance was given to the water resources. In that period, many waterways, bents, bridges, fountains, baths, şadırvans, water dispensers were built and maksems and the waterways built which took on important role in the distribution of the water. The Ottomans were used lots of water sources which were built by Byzantines and they started to use essential waterways with period of Fatih Sultan Mehmed. In that period, the old waterways were fixed and the new ones were added. In the period of Sultan the Magnificent, important arrangements about management have been made. The Ministry of Water was founded; foundations took on important role on the management. Water travelers, water kethüdas, dispensers and sakas rendered a service on the waterways. We can see these water technologies in the buildings that constructed by the Ottomans, is a perfect example of architecture and also aesthetic. Many terms are entered our literature with the Ottomans. For example short 'lules' are used for measurement of water and 'kunks' are used for distribution. Twist lules were used for preventing water wasting. Tapas, which replaced the twist lules in later times, are the first examples of modern taps.
