Evaluation of nutritional status and total antioxidant capacity in individuals diagnosed of osteoarthritis

Abstract (EN)
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the nutritional status of individuals with osteoarthritis, to evaluate dietary total antioxidant capacity and serum total antioxidant/oxidant capacity, and to examine the relationship between total antioxidant capacity and nutritional status of individuals. Method: In the study, socio-demographic characteristics, dietary habits, dietary total antioxidant levels, nutritional habits, consumption frequency, food consumption record and physical activity levels of 47 individuals (case group) and 30 healthy individuals (control group) with osteoarthritis between the ages of 18-64 who applied to the outpatient clinics of Ankara City Hospital Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Hospital. were evaluated. Anthropometric and blood pressure measurements of the individuals were taken and some biochemical findings were recorded from the hospital files. Total antioxidant/oxidant capacity of individuals was measured with the EREL method. Results: The healthy and OA patients were similar in terms of age, gender and body mass index (p>0.05). It has been observed that 83.0% of individuals with osteoarthritis are overweight or obese. The daily consumption of red meat and butter of the individuals in the case group was higher than that of the healthy group, and their fish consumption and dietary vitamin A and carotene intakes were found to be lower (p<0.05). Dietary total antioxidant capacity (10.6±3.89 mmol) of individuals diagnosed with osteoarthritis was found to be lower than the dietary total antioxidant capacity (12.4±3.57 mmol) of the healthy group (p<0.05). In addition, individuals diagnosed with OA have total oxidant capacity (4.6±3.63 and 3.6±1.40 µmol H2O2 Equivalent) and oxidative stress index (0.2±0.05 and 0.2±0.07 AU) was also found to be higher than in healthy individuals (p<0.05). Conclusion Due to the high BMI of individuals with osteoarthritis, low dietary total antioxidant capacity and high serum total oxidant capacity; Individuals with OA should be brought to their ideal body weight and their diets should be enriched with antioxidant vitamins and minerals.
