Abstract (EN)
Introduction: Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disease characterized by decreased bone mass, deterioration in bone structure, and risk of fracture. The gradual increase in the elderly increases the risk of osteoporosis and related bone fracture. Objective: This study examined the relationship of bisphosphonate with bone mineral density, biochemical parameters of the patient, and pathological fracture formation in patients followed up for osteoporosis and using bisphosphonate for treatment, and to contribute to the knowledge of primary care physicians in this context. Material and method: All patients over 50 and men over 60 years of age between 2011 and 2021, who were diagnosed with osteoporosis and started bisphosphonate therapy in Başkent University Ankara Hospital, were examined. The drugs used by the patients receiving bisphosphonate therapy, duration of treatment, fractures, if any, and affected sites were evaluated. Data were obtained from the electronic patient database of Başkent University Ankara Hospital. The BMD measurements, type of used drug and duration, whether the drug was discontinued, possible side effects, and number of fractures since diagnosis were investigated. Statistical significance was accepted as p<0.05. Results: Of the 341 patients included in the study, 86% were female, and the mean age was 70. The mean duration of bisphosphonate use was 3.6 years, and the difference between men and women was not statistically significant. A significant increase was detected in all-level BMD scores in all patients after bisphosphonate treatment (p<0.01). There was a significant increase in serum Calcium, Phosphorus and Mg values of all patients after bisphosphonate treatment (p<0.01). A positive correlation was found between the duration of bisphosphonate use and the pre-and post-treatment differences in L1-L4 and Frmut total scores. Fractures were detected in 3 patients (1.17%) in the study population. Conclusion: Osteoporosis is a disease of high clinical importance that commonly affects elderly women. It has been observed that the use of bisphosphonates in osteoporosis disease in elderly patients slows the exacerbation of osteoporosis. Keywords: Alendronate, osteoporosis, pathological fracture
